Sculptures carved from wood

Working with Huon pine is a great privilege: these pieces are created from Huon more than 1000 years old. It is soft and buttery to work with, and silky smooth after sanding and waxing. It is important to know that Huon pine is no longer harvested from living trees. The harvesting takes place under strict regulations, from trees that were felled many decades ago and the supply of this will only last another two generations. I also work with many other types of wood such as cherry, and very gnarly old hardwoods reclaimed from fallen structures or found in nature.

"Inner, Outer, Infinity: A Möbius Meditation"

This sculpture reflects the seamless flow between inner and outer worlds, where thought transforms into action and action returns to thought. Its Möbius-like form symbolizes the infinite cycle of transformation, inviting contemplation on the interconnected nature of existence.

It is a special wood to work with. Often found in the arid landscapes of central Australia, Gidgee trees endure harsh conditions, and for me they symbolise resilience and inner strength. Their wood is incredibly dense, dark, and rich, reflecting both the ruggedness of the land and a hidden beauty within.

Infinite possibilities

I hand carved this relief from Linden wood. Each curve and fold, a testament to the infinite possibilities that lie within. With my hands upon the wood, metaphors unfurled, reflecting life's ebbs and flows, its twists and turns.

"Echoes of the 9th symphony"

A sculpture carved from Huon pine, a wood known for its resilience and rich history. The piece embodies the spirit of Beethoven's 9th Symphony, capturing the essence of hope, unity, and fellowship.

Finding balance

Carving this ancient and exquisite piece of Huon Pine, I found myself immersed in the fascinating contours of a Möbius strip. As I shaped the wood, navigating the intricate balance between inner and outer, I embarked on a journey of discovery. Each stroke of the chisel was a step towards finding balance, a process both humbling and exhilarating.

Foldings

This wooden sculpture is carefully carved from the wood of a linden tree, resulting in a beautifully textured and dynamic piece. "Foldings" captures the graceful and fluid movement of silk as it elegantly cascades and intertwines. The sculpture is expertly framed, allowing for the beauty of the intricate folds and curves to shine.

The Sands of Cape Leveque or 'what is left behind'

I sculpted this single piece of ancient Huon Pine, a timber that bears witness to millennia in the cradle of southern Tasmania. Each stroke of the chisel, a tribute to the enduring spirit of this majestic timber, and the coastline of the far north of Australia. In its veins run the echoes of ancient forests, and landscapes, and tells the story of what is left behind.
