renewal-the flow of life

This sculptural bowl arose out of contemplation on the cycle of life, on how impressions come into us, become part of us and flow out of us in a renewed way, giving us the opportunity for development and growth.

The Huon pine, an ancient marvel of Tasmania, stands as one of the oldest living organisms on earth. Endemic to this unique region of Australia, it is celebrated for its extraordinary qualities and distinct attributes. Not only does its age astound—some trees surpass 3,000 years—but its resilience and distinctive aroma set it apart. Known as one of the world’s most durable timbers, Huon pine has specimens that have been unearthed from soil and dated to 38,000 years old, still in remarkable condition thanks to its methyl eugenol content, which protects it from rot and insects.

Found in the cool temperate rainforests, the Huon pine is cherished for its dense, fine-grained timber. Craftspeople prize its durability and the beautiful golden color that deepens with age. Due to its slow growth and limited distribution, this timber is now a rare and highly sought-after commodity. The finite stock that remains in storage only heightens its value and allure.

Today, most Huon pine timber comes from stockpiles and underwater salvaging efforts. Logs that have lain submerged for centuries are recovered in perfect condition, continuing to supply specialist craftsmen, artists, and woodworking enthusiasts. Each piece of Huon pine carries the weight of history and the promise of timeless beauty, making it a treasured material in the hands of those who appreciate its legacy.
